Ok, so I’m not only going way backwards from my effort last week to do something current-ish, but I’m once again hitting up the Beatles for my song of the week. I fully admit it, but I suppose I could do worse.
Tonight I hung out with a bunch of fine, talented people and – no big surprise – we all pretty much thought the Beatles were fab. At some point we got onto a bit of a “who did the best Beatles covers?” rant. My vote was for Deep Purple‘s epic and indulgent take on “Help” from 1968. I’ve always loved this odd take on a classic, ever since my uncle was kind enough to pass his copy of Shades Of… on to me. Good stuff.
For reasons inexplicable to me, our host did not actually have the song on his boom-box so that we could listen to its 6 minutes of glory together. Not surprisingly, the iTunes 30-second preview didn’t quite do it justice and so here. it. is.
As a special bonus, here’s their take on “We CAn Work It Out” from a year later.

Yes, Deep Purple is one of the best bands ever and is one of my favorites! They made cool covers and songs during their whole carrier… Thanks for the video, it helped me to get good emotions!
Glad to be of service! And yeah, great band. HUGE influence on me in my early years. Seeing them in 1984 is very memorable.
